Old Scugog

Concept

The clients asked if I could design and build a front landscape that would provide them with a much needed sidewalk and steps to the front entrance of their home. They also wanted to update their front gardens, while keeping garden maintenance to a minimum. The landscape design was to have a contemporary feel while respecting the country look of the home’s architecture.

Design

It was essential to add depth to the front of the house because the raised basement and tall peak of the front gable made the facade of the house feel two dimensional. Patterns are one way to add depth to a landscape design. Four framed squares were used within the design, helping to move the eye from one square to the next as the geometric shapes were integrated to provide a strong sense of unity. The garden square with the multi-stem Katsura was used to create greater depth from the face of the house as it was pulled out from the existing architecture. Plants of various texture, shape, and height provided more depth while adding visual interest. Finally, all gardens were bordered with a concrete coping to keep the design linear, clean, and easy to maintain.

Result

The photographs show the garden following completion in the late fall of 2020, and then again, late spring of 2023.
